Item Description

English Rose Snuff manufactured by Gawith Hoggarth, a fine to medium grind and slightly moist. Scented surprisingly with English Rose!

English Rose snuff is supplied to the House of Commons, a short extract as taken from their leaflet explaining the customs of the House is below.

* Another curious survival of the eighteenth century is the provision of snuff, in recent years at public expense, for Members and Officers of the House, at the doorkeepers' box at the entrance to the Chamber. Very few Members take snuff nowadays. Snuff, however, is the only form of tobacco to be tolerated in or around the Chamber: smoking has been banned there and in committees since 1693. *

So there you have it, if you're after a traditional snuff, you can't get anymore traditional than English Rose.

Very clear from the first pinch why this blend has a permanent residence in the House of Commons - absolutely sublime, well balanced and moreish. Be sure to get a sufficiently generous quantity on the first go, you and your fellow snuffers will deplete the little tin faster than the Royal Mail can get your next order. Difficult to imagine any snuff better than this one.

As others have said: nice, gentle, pleasantly refreshing ...

That said I have to say I find just a touch dry compared to either Wilson's Rose of Sharrow, or Fribourg & Treyer's "Macouba". I also find English Rose can occasionally show just the slightest trace of ammonia, which I have never noticed in either the Wilsons' or Fribourg's offerings.

On the plus side, it's a convenient container when you're out-and-about - although the slight dryness of the preparation can cause over-pour.

Overall, then, quite a pleasant rose snuff, if a little dry ... my preference is for either Wilsons' Rose of Sharrow [pure rose] or Fribourg & Treyer's Macouba [Turkish Delight à la Fortnum & Mason, for those who liken rose snuff to Turkish delight!]

What a lovely gentle snuff,quite a suprise and what a lovely scent of roses (damask rose) is some where in amongst the smell.Nice after dinner snuff to suprise your guests.

This snuff is a real treat for me and is one of my favorites.

The gentle sweet smell of rose just seems so natural to snuff, like sniffing roses in a summer garden and the texture is just perfect not to dry and not to moist.

After a good snuff you also get the taste of it in the back of your throat like you have just eaten a box of fine turkish delight.

There are other flavours in there that compliment the main rose but it is all about that main flavour.

Also I really like the handy box for dispensing the snuff into your anatomical snuffbox but if you are a pincher this could be a problem as you would have to lay the snuff out before pinching.

I'm a sucker for Rose flavoured things (Turkish Delight being a particular favourite). This is my first purchase from the Gawith Hoggarth range and I'm very pleased. This Snuff comes in a handy plastic dispenser. I found this one difficult to pinch, it seemed very dry and for this reason it seems to work better off the back of the hand. Straight out of the box and up the nose there is definitely Rose present. It's not overpowering but not too subdued either, just a smooth, well balanced blend. I like it, it's easy any time of the day. I would buy this again and I will certainly be investigating the rest of the Gawith Hoggarth range in the near future. This may, just may become my first regular snuff of choice.
