FRIBOURG & TREYER FRENCH CAROTTE SNUFF

Item Description

French Carotte Snuff by Fribourg & Treyer is blended using Zimbabwe Flue Cured Leaf, Dark Cured Leaf & Flue Cured Stem tobacco.

Flavoured with Sandalwood Oil & French Carotte Essence, French Carotte snuff is historically described as below;

"Snuff blending allows for infinite variety, since the many bases and well-nigh limitless perfumes give the expert ample scope for experiment. Sometimes, a happy combination of ingredients is arrived at with gratifying results. This happened with French Carotte.

As a mixture it is new but the components were in use over two centuries ago. In earlier time the word “Carotte” meant the roll of tobacco from which snuff users grated their own; today it names one of the finest bases, smooth and retentive, deserving only the best of perfumes.

One such is sandalwood oil which is distilled from the aromatic wood of a small evergreen tree grown in the East, and has a delicate non-cloying aroma faintly suggestive of incense. Combining these select ingredients has produced a charming snuff of unique distinction."

Price is for what is described as a 'medium' tin containing approximately 1oz of French Carotte snuff.

This product exemplifies sophistication, it has an extremely delicate smell and is a wonderful addition to the snuff aficionado's collection.

The packaging is simplistic with an elegant design, which comes with a royal endorsement which i found particularly attractive.

It has a healthy colour, therefore making it agreeable to the eyes, and the perfumed smell which remains in the nose is exquisite after snuffing.

Fribourg and Treyer, like always, excel to the utmost with all their products, and this is no exception.

My first impressions of this snuff were not too favourable: it was the third F&T I had tried and I had found the previous two over-poweringly perfumed. The aroma from the tin was superb, but I found actually snuffing it dissapointing.
My problem is I usually like more brutal snuffs that pack a punch. After a time though I began using this more and more, it's a contemplative snuff: the sublety creeps up on you and I find it really relaxing. Sandlewood is of course the mainstay of many an incense and has been used for centuries to calm minds in Eastern temples. Having a demanding office job I find this gently guides me through the day now and I can thoroughly recommend it to jaded souls who need a snuff to provide a long lasting, yet subtle change of pace.

David Orman pretty-much has this snuff summed-up.

It brings on the freshness and confidence of a good, unhurried shave, followed by a subtle, not-overpowering gentleman's after-shave.

The nicotine lift is not the "sudden gear change" of some snuffs, but is again more refined and gentlemanly, although also quite reassuring and long-lasting.

Like other seriously good snuffs, the aroma of French Carotte is long lasting, and eventually fades gently, rather than becoming disappointing in the manner of some of the newer brands.

Somewhat like being able to take a refreshing shave later in the day whilst at the desk or in the studio!

This is my first encounter with the delights of Fribourg and Treyer; based on this, I shall certainly be back for more, and to try some of their others.

Tobacco: Zimbabwe flue-cured leaf; dark cured leaf & flue-cured stem.

Flavourings: Sandalwood oil; French Carotte essence.

Strength of flavour: medium.

Moisture: medium

Grind: fine

Longevity of flavour: Medium-long.

This is evidently sandalwood, but is accompanied by other scents (presumably what is described as French Carotte Essence).

F&T [Behind the Bow Windows] say that this snuff "has a delicate non-cloying aroma faintly suggestive of incense." Not a bad summary, though the snuff is rather more than this.

It’s refined, with a gentleman’s club feel to it, evoking comparisons with the luxurious scent of a good shaving cream or after-shave, without being overpowering. In this respect, my initial reaction (first pinch) was to wonder whether I should have applied it to my face: somehow it felt a little strange to be insufflating French Carotte. But a few minutes with the cool, lingering scent and medium (but noticeable) nictotine left me convinced that, though this is likely to be an occasional sniff, it is as likely to be added to the names on my list of Desert Island Snuffs.

My tin of this currently resides in my desk drawer at work, from whence I extract a large pinch when in need of something refined, edifying and, quite simply, joyous.

This snuff is truly wonderful. I have long been aware of F&T but have always head difficulty getting hold of it - so full marks to the Snuff Store!
Fribourg & Treyer is the Rolls Royce of snuff and this one is very impressive indeed. Light Brown in colour and surprisingly, for a fine grind, it\'s also quite moist.
The scent is hard to define as there appears to be an array of flavours blended into it but the best way I can describe it is like walking past the perfume counter in an upmarket department store.
I will not rest easy until I\'ve tried all the other F&T snuffs because French Carotte is a true masterpiece.
