Item Description

High Dry Toast Snuff by Fribourg & Treyer is blended with Zimbabwe Flue Cured Stem, Dark Fired Leaf & Sun Cured Leaf tobacco.

High Dry Toast is a natural tobacco snuff with added flavours.

Historic description of Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast snuff state that it is of Irish origin, and that this unique snuff has a niche of its own among the dry kinds.

The description goes on to state that High Dry Toast is superfine, almost powder in mill and that it has a strange nutty flavour of deceptive strength. It is the lightest of all snuffs in colour. Though not of universal popularity, its followers are a staunch and conservative body.

It goes on to say that like Elia’s RoastPork, the forerunners of this variety of snuff were discovered by accident, when the tobacco burned in a Dublin factory was sold to be consumed as snuff.

Price is for what is described as a 'medium' tin containing approximately 1oz of High Dry Toast snuff.

An "Irish" without the word Irish on the tin!

This is an excellent, high roast, fine ground, dry-ish, pale gold snuff. As one might expect from the Fribourg & Treyer pedigree, this is like a very good sherry - bone dry, yet silky smooth. Think Gonzales Byass Elegante or Tio Pepe.

Like some of my favourite malt whiskies, this also has a wonderfully woody, slightly smoky character.

Where I disagree with other reviewers is the gentleman who describes this as identical to Wilsons' Irish DH Toast No 22. No Sir! Wilsons' DHT22 is rather more lemony, and somewhat less smoky than F&T HDT.

Where does that leave us, then?

F&T is certainly my favourite of the Toasts from Sharrow, and on a par with the excellent Irish "D" and Irish "D" Light from Samuel Gawith.

The F&T blend is just a little less overtly "nutty" than Sam Gawith's Irish "D" Light, but the F&T mix scores on its smokiness.

As with most of the F&T family, this is an excellent snuff, and a "must try" if you like snuffs in the Irish tradition.

A very light fine powder that takes no effort to snort. A pleasant but subtle flavor and very nice to carry in a bullet for every day use. Great value for money !

First of all, this is an excellent snuff. Fribourg and Treyer have really hit the nail on the head with this one, it does exactly what you want it to. I liken the aroma to that of a woodshop or sawmill; tobacco crossed with sawdust and woodsmoke, combining to create a wonderful natural flavour. The nicotine content is high and gives a good heady rush, although you do have to be careful with this one, it is extremely fine so don’t sniff too hard!

I also like to use this snuff in a mix, at the moment I have it 1:2 with Wilsons of Sharrow Menthol Plus. This gives you the initial burn and head clearing effect of the menthol, followed up with a subtle yet long lasting smoky-tobacco scent - excellent as an evening snuff.

Strong, fine, delightfully smoky and sheer bliss. This is one which can be taken all day without the clogging effects of some of the moister snuffs, but beware the nicotine head: an ache is a sure sign that you've overdone it (though that may be considered a price well worth paying sometimes!).

I love the F&T tins' class and abillity to preserve the contents' aroma; but this is one snuff that would benefit from being supplied in a container that's rather easier to carry around and use straight from the 'tin': decanting it to a box does rather too quickly lose a little of its initial bouquet.

Sheer, unadulterated pleasure: the satisfying (though very mild) burn is followed immediately by the smoky, toasted flavour reminiscent of all that is luxuriously tasteful of English culture (I'm thinking here of gentlemen's clubs, cricket pavilions, a poetry reading by Johnson, or even a stroll in cultivated public gardens).

The taking of it demands an appropriately refined technique -- too harshly sniffed (or, God forbid, snorted) and this one will object strongly. Quite right too: quality demands culture, and only a little care allows the savouring of what can only be called snuff at its very finest.

Magnificent.

does exactly what it says on the tin, very dry with a toasted flavour. really fine grind so maybe not the best for your first tin as its easy to sniff too hard making it catch the back of your throat, but if you're feeling adventurous go for it, if its your first time you might want a glass of water handy till you get the hang of it though

If you are a beginner, afraid of the reputation acquired by the dry toasted snuffs, put your fears aside and do try this. I wasn't able to handle these snuffs well for quite some time, and then one day it just came naturally.

Is it worth the effort? Yes! Now I can enjoy a natural, tasty snuff all day. It has never grown tiresome or cloying by the day's end, it seems to suit any occasion, beverage, or meal, and it has a long history or pleasing snuffers everywhere.

I find the F&T quite indentical to Wilson's #22 (I have both right in front of me as I type!) but there's no price disadvantage to the F&T and one gets the gorgeous tin to admire!
