Snuff News - New Stock Added

May 15th, 2008

Hi All,

Two new snuff boxes added to the snuff box section. We’ve also had loads of deliveries this week and many items that have been out of stock are now available again.

We’ve had a delivery of Samuel Gawith’s Scotch Black; for some reason Scotch Black is in a white ‘new style’ plastic carton… Don’t know whether this is just a once off.

For a brief idea as to what’s in this week, please see below.

New Two Tone Rose Wood Snuff Box now in stock.

New Crest Embossed Wooden Snuff Box now in stock.

Silver Snuff Box Engraved Lid back in stock.

Silver Plain Snuff Box back in stock.

Samuel Gawith - Scotch Black, Banana, Black Coffee and Cherry are now only available in the new cartons. As mentioned above, Scotch Black for some reason is in the white version of the new plastic carton. We still have some supplies of the other blends in tins, but as our supplier’s stock is exhausted we will gradually move over to the new style cartons. Take advantage of the tin stocks as prices are reduced.

Gawith Hoggarth - Aniseed, Eucalyptus, Tia Maria & Strawberry are now back in stock.

J & H Wilsons - Medicated 99 back in stock.

Snuff Book By Ursula Bourne back in stock.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Silver Snuff Box With Engraved Lid

April 24th, 2008

Just taken delivery of these lovely silver snuff boxes with engraved lids - Silver Snuff Box Engraved Lid.

The snuff box is made from .925 Sterling Silver. It has various hallmarks on the back; size-wise, it’s approximately 6.2 cm x 3.4 cm x 1.5 cm and weighs about 34 grams. The below is of the silver snuff box standing next to a one penny piece to give some idea of size.

The below picture may give you some idea of how shiny these silver snuff boxes are. Please excuse my reflection in this image, but I wanted to try and get some detail of the engraving on the lid!

The next  two images are of the silver snuff box open, with the snuff storage area shown. Again, I’ve used a penny piece to try and give a size comparison for you.

Chewing Tobacco In the UK

April 24th, 2008

Chewing tobacco now in stock.

With all the fuss about Snus, and whether the EU will allow this form of chewing tobacco to be sold in the UK and other European countries, it’s easy to forget that the UK already has a strong tradition of producing chewing tobacco twists. In fact, things have progressed so far in recent years that you can even buy chewing tobacco twists pre-cut in managable sized ‘pellet’ pieces.

Smokeless tobacco products have been historically used throughout the ages in the UK. They have been popular with people working in smoke free environments; miners, tailors, sailors, and all other professions in which it may have been thought as ’unseemly’ to be seen to be smoking, or in fact dangerous in the case of those working down the mines or on old wooden ships.

The below image being an example of Condor Pigtail chewing tobacco, sold in the mine shops until the vast majority closed in the late 1980 - 90’s.

Snuff Store now stocks pre-cut sections of twist chewing tobacco and Oliver Twist chewing tobacco pellets. Please scroll down to see the links and various flavours in stock.

St. George’s Day Snuff

April 23rd, 2008

Happy St. George’s Day To One And All…

Today I’ll be mostly snuffing English Rose.

St. George

Shakespeare. Henry V - Act III, Scene I.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour’d rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o’erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O’erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill’d with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call’d fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’

Happy St. George’s Day!

Hedges L260 Snuff - ‘The Snuff’

April 11th, 2008

Hedges Snuff L260 - also known as ’The Snuff’ is a fine mentholated snuff.

Hedges  snuff was originally invented by William Ross Hedges, a chemist from Birmingham. Interestingly, Hedges snuff was offered as a ‘cure all’ remedy for various cold related ailments!

Hedges L260 is one of the last snuffs widely available in tobacconists. It is a snuff that has been copied by several other snuff manufacturers - I’m sure if you do a little research, which snuffs will be revealed.

Hedges snuff is a fine powdered dry-ish brown snuff tobacco powder. It is a great all day snuff for those who like their snuff on the menthol side. It has a reported good nicotine kick, so may be suitable for those looking to replace ’smoking tobacco’ with smokeless tobacco snuff alternatives - read this.

For more information on William Ross Hedges click here. I do not know whether the below entry copied from the War Graves reference site, refers to the son of William Ross Hedges the Birmingham based chemist - no matter what, it is still a reminder of the sacrifice made by previous generations on our behalf.
