Chewing Tobacco In the UK

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Chewing tobacco now in stock.

With all the fuss about Snus, and whether the EU will allow this form of chewing tobacco to be sold in the UK and other European countries, it’s easy to forget that the UK already has a strong tradition of producing chewing tobacco twists. In fact, things have progressed so far in recent years that you can even buy chewing tobacco twists pre-cut in managable sized ‘pellet’ pieces.

Smokeless tobacco products have been historically used throughout the ages in the UK. They have been popular with people working in smoke free environments; miners, tailors, sailors, and all other professions in which it may have been thought as ’unseemly’ to be seen to be smoking, or in fact dangerous in the case of those working down the mines or on old wooden ships.

The below image being an example of Condor Pigtail chewing tobacco, sold in the mine shops until the vast majority closed in the late 1980 - 90’s.

St. George’s Day Snuff

Happy St. George’s Day To One And All…

Today I’ll be mostly snuffing English Rose.

St. George

Shakespeare. Henry V - Act III, Scene I.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour’d rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o’erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O’erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill’d with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call’d fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’

Happy St. George’s Day!

Hedges L260 Snuff - ‘The Snuff’

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Hedges Snuff L260 - also known as ’The Snuff’ is a fine mentholated snuff.

Hedges  snuff was originally invented by William Ross Hedges, a chemist from Birmingham. Interestingly, Hedges snuff was offered as a ‘cure all’ remedy for various cold related ailments!

Hedges L260 is one of the last snuffs widely available in tobacconists. It is a snuff that has been copied by several other snuff manufacturers - I’m sure if you do a little research, which snuffs will be revealed.

Hedges snuff is a fine powdered dry-ish brown snuff tobacco powder. It is a great all day snuff for those who like their snuff on the menthol side. It has a reported good nicotine kick, so may be suitable for those looking to replace ’smoking tobacco’ with smokeless tobacco snuff alternatives - read this.

For more information on William Ross Hedges click here. I do not know whether the below entry copied from the War Graves reference site, refers to the son of William Ross Hedges the Birmingham based chemist - no matter what, it is still a reminder of the sacrifice made by previous generations on our behalf.

Stammheimer Hopfen Schnuph

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Stammheimer Hopfen Schnuph is a hop flavoured snuff from McChrystals and is now available at Snuff Store.

Stammheimer Hopfen Schnuph is a snuff of distinctive flavour and quality, it is as close to a ‘beer’ flavoured snuff that we’ve come across. The flavour is bitter, sweet, and tangy all at the same time!

Stammheimer Hopfen Schnuph - Tin Open

 Stammheimer Hopfen - Snuff Open And Tin Lid

Stammheimer Hopfen snuff has a nice aroma of hops and tobacco and as soon as you open the tin you notice the scent, which is quite unlike any other snuff we’ve tried. Stammheimer Hopfen snuff is brown in colour and has a grind consistency similar to McChrystals’ O & G. It comes in a McChrystals ‘large’ tin and contains about 8.75 g of snuff.

Stammheimer Hopfen snuff is specifically blended for the continental European market and considered to be a ‘difficult to get hold of snuff’, it carries the same name as a Hop Farm in Switzerland. It is I believe a snuff created as a collaboration between McChrystals and the Stammheimer Hopfen Hop Farm, you can find a link to their website here. It’s a page translated into English, you can return it back to original language when you get there if you like.

Snuff & Snow

Snuff & Snow

We had a un-seasonable snow storm this morning. Some time between 7 and 8 o’clock it started snowing and at times it was near blizzard conditions.

We live in Surrey and so being in the south of England, we don’t usually get that much snow.

Now there’s a big kid in all of us I suppose, so I was just as excited about the snow as my two sons - Toby and Zach; we all rushed breakfast and as quickly as possible got some warm clothes on and ventured out into the snow to play!
