Fribourg & Treyer Snuff is now produced by Wilsons Of Sharrow.

Fribourg & Treyer (which was bought by Imperial Tobacco) sold it’s snuff recipes to Wilsons, as a result of a rent increase on the Fribourg & Treyer shop premises in 1982, which forced Imperial Tobacco to close the premises as it was considered not to be financially viable.

On researching Fribourg & Treyer snuff, I have found a lovely reproduction of a Fribourg & Treyer Snuff Booklet with personal notes from a Fribourg & Treyer snuff user. This booklet is linked on various snuff forums and I will gladly acknowledge the author if he / she contacts me.

In documents supplied by Wilsons, they describe various Fribourg & Treyer snuff blends as below.

As snuff manufacturers since 1737, we are proud to maintain the highest traditions of snuff manufacture by offering the following range of Fribourg & Treyer snuff based on the original recipes.

Bordeaux Snuff - A popular mixture of medium strength and mill: a blend of moist and dry snuffs retaining the virtues of both. Piquant and refreshing, it never clogs and is a favourite with the heavy user.

High Dry Toast Snuff - Superfine, almost powdery in mill it has a strange nutty flavour of deceptive strength. Of Irish origin, this is the lightest of all the snuffs.

French Carotte Snuff - Flavoured with Sandalwood Oil & French Carotte essence, described as a happy combination of ingredients with gratifying results. The name French Carotte refers back to an earlier time, when snuff users ‘grated their own’ snuff from a ‘carotte’ of tobacco.

Kendal Brown Snuff - An attractive, deep brown mixture of the moist class, coarse-milled and pleasantly perfumed. Could be regarded as the fruity port amongst snuffs. It has a select band of patrons of unswerving loyalty. A satisfying snuff having its origins in the John Peel country.

Macouba Snuff - A moist, brown snuff of medium mill and strength. This delicious snuff is mentioned in Thackeray’s PENDENNIS and may well have suggested to Dickens the name of his famous character, Mr. Micawber. It is interesting to note that it is still perfumed with pure attar of roses, as it was one hundred and fifty years ago.

Morlaix Snuff - A modern fine ground brown snuff with a delightfully refreshing aroma. A happy blend between the dark and light snuffs which appeals to the snuff user who likes to try something different.

Morocco Snuff - A deep rich brown, but finely ground and fairly moist, snuff. Its very pleasant floral flavour is enhanced by the addition of Geranium Africanis.

Old Paris - This blend, a favourite of Beau Brummel, has the strange wine-like quality of maturing during storage. This rich, full-bodied snuff, dark in colour and coarse in texture, is ideal for the moderate user who enjoys an occasional satisfying pinch.

Princes Snuff - A rich black snuff for those who prefer a coarse-milled mixture of full bouquet. The most widely used of the moist varieties. It has strong Regency associations and has retained its appeal for over a century and a half.

Princes Special Snuff - A dark, moist blend, in which the rich fullness of Princes Mixture is retained, tempered with lighter, finer-milled snuff of subtle fragrance.

Santo Domingo Snuff - This medium coarse dark snuff with a base containing a subtle blend of dark fired tobacco enhanced by the addition of the scents of violet and cedar makes this a favourite with the connoisseur of dark snuffs.

Seville Snuff - The delicate orange character of its perfume brings to mind the sunlit groves and quaint architecture of that ancient Moorish city. This will especially please those takers who favour an occasional pinch of a dry, piquant snuff as a change from the heavier, moister kinds.

Dr. James Robertson Justice’s Mixture Snuff - The learned doctor’s own private formula. Dark, moist and full-hearted.

So in conclusion, although the original premises may have disappeared a quarter of a century ago, through Wilsons of Sharrow, we can all still enjoy Fribourg & Treyer Snuff.
