These horn snuff flasks are made from deer horn and have a pewter / metal image on either side showing an image of King Ludwig II and a bird.

King Ludwig II of Bavaria has a strong connection with snuff takers in the Bavarian region of Germany, and is famous for (among other things) his extravagance and style. The snuff flask measures approximately 7cm x 5cm x 2cm - although they do vary slightly in size from flask to flask, due to the nature of the product being crafted from natural deer horn.

The horn snuff flask is imported from Germany and is a traditional method of carrying snuff - historically fashioned and decended from old style 'gun powder flasks'. The horn flask has a horn stopper at the top, which has a tight fit and prevents snuff leakage.

On opening the sample tub, the first scent is a healthy farmyard aroma. Following Snuffster\'s advice, I decanted some into a snuff box and let it breathe for an hour. On [re]opening the box one is hit with an incredibly strong scent of cherries, rich, powerful and vibrant with alchohol and coffee. In the nose, there is the rich, sweet smell of cherries, followed by rum or brandy and coffee. As the box continues to warn to near body temperature, these combine together and intensify, before separating into their different component scents, gradually fading away to a soft, sweet scent, which I cannot place.
The flour is medium coarse, damp and a wonderful, dark red colour.
As with Abraxas Club and Premium blend, the nicotine content is very satisfying.
This is an exquisite dessert snuff and a masterpiece of the blender\'s art. Like a good wine, it can only improve with age.

So far, I have tried Klostermischung, Brasil Fresco, Postillion, Zwiefacher, and Magic Moments Black. The Magic Moments is my least favorite. It reminds me of a strawberry coconut daquiri. I happen to hate coconut flavor, so this is not my cup of tea and I wont purchase it again. However, if your into coconut and strawberry, this is right up you alley! The quality of the tobacco is dark and moist. I would definately offer this to a lady. Great quality snuff, just now my cup of tea. I give it a 2 for flavor, but 5 for quality.

Offenbacher Cardinal Snuff by Bernard.

As stated before, this could really be called a \"lighter\" version of the Alt Offenbacher Köstlich, being slightly softer and drier, maybe it only isn´t fermented as long. But for sure it´s flavour is richer than most other snuffs, only not as heavy and deep as the AOK. Nonetheless the flavour is quite delightfull and the big measurement this comes in (50g and very reasonably priced) suggests to take it in large portions and indeed taking it all day works fine. Not too heavy in nicotine and it won´t go too far up the nose. Another nice example of what can be done plainly with tobacco itself.

Pariser No.2 Snuff by Bernard.

Much more fine and dry than the other schmalzlers I've tried, except its bottle-brother, Civette Extrafein. Tapping some on the back of your hand from the bottle is a bit awkward, so I'd recommend decanting into another container possibly. Very dark brown, and takes a bit more sharp a sniff to get up then most other schmalzlers for me. It's got a nice little burn to it, and an appreciable dose of nicotine. The smell is of a high grade cigar, with some herbal notes alongside it, and a smoky smell in the back. The smoke scent wavers just this side of chemical, but ultimately smells of a nicely burning tobacco.

This snuff is very similar to Bernard's Klostermischung, which I absolutely love. Klostermischung has more of a smokey campfire flavor, while Postillion is a slightly sweeter and less smokey. I'm just floored by aromatic scent of schmalzlers and this one is a keeper. I'm a bit more inclined to Klostermischung, but this is not far behind. I'm sure my favor towards one over the other will be dependent on what I feel. The scent lasts a long time, and is beautifully complex. Keep in mind, I have a sweet tooth and I will always, always have a tap-box of a Bernard Schmalzler on hand!

Regensburger Snuff by Bernard.

I came across this on Mr Snuff's page and having travelled to Regensburg several times I recognised the river bridge on the box. I have tried one schmalzer snuff before and so I thought I would give this a go.
It is a rich dark colour moist and prone to clumping. I decanted it to a tin and sampled........the first pinch revealed a warm soft aroma , mildly fruity with an amazing malty near chocolate coffee after note, long lasting and an extremely mystifying series of developing notes.My colleague at work sits opposite me and commented on the aroma , he could not place a single element but said it was very pleasant and racked his brains trying to place it.
I am not a fan of tap tins but decanted it can be sniffed with a tube pinched or snuffed from the back of the hand.
A grand snuff that will lead me to try more of Bernards Offerings.I have a tap tin of Klostermischung to try and I am looking forward to it with great anticipation

Incredible. A perfect holiday snuff. Opening the tap box, I smell a cherry-vanilla scent. like frosting with hints of cinnamon. The tobacco is a nice moist medium grind-a mid brown tobacco with a hue like red earth. No burn, just a shot of cinnamon-nutmeg goodness. There is an undertone of roasted walnuts. It almost reminds me of a hot tamale candy...but don't let that comparison take away from the complexity of the snuff. Many different layers. When I was young, I got a Christmas ornament stuffed withed holiday scented potpourri. I still have that ornament and the scent is still there. This reminds me of that scent. A perfect companion to a coffee and khalua or spiced eggnogg. A perfect holiday snuff!

Zwiefacher Schmalzler Snuff by Bernard

When I ran the description of Zwiefacher Schmalzler snuff through a German / English translation, I was given; 'incomparable in it's Schmalzler Snuff kind'.

I would tend to agree, but I will try and expand on the flavours of this wonderful schmalzler - which has nothing comparable in it's kind!

It's a cross between a schmalzler and a nice menthol snuff. What you end up with is a schmalzler with all the usual heady aromas of fermented maple, figs, raisins and dates, plus menthol of the like of polar or gletcher prise.

These seperate and seemingly incompatible aromas combine into a snuff flavoured holy matrimony that has to be snuffed to be believed. The menthol is always there, just slide the doser and you'll be able to detect it... But there's something else, the schmalzler flavours and aromas.

Spicey, maple, fruity and menthol - it's truly without comparison!

Thunder Frosted has a very smooth long lasting spearmint taste. Thunder V2 is made from the best hand selected tobacco leafs.

Thunder V2 Chew is made after the original Swedish recipe for  and has a traditional snus aroma and hints of bergamot. An extra strong snus that comes on smooth and stays that way.

Well stone me, this is "chew" of sorts, it says its chewing tobacco in the can, the grind is slightly finer than Thunder loose and the nicotine kicks harder, but this V2 makla, or snuskla as I like to call it. Bottom line, it looks, smells and tastes like Thunder loose snus, but it is meant to be "chewed" so it isn't snus  I loaded up my icetool and threw a pris in the upper lip just like snus.

On using it all week it stays packed well like the snus does but the drip, just like the snus, can be very harsh if you aren't used to extra stark snus, but you get used to it. Lovely lemony taste to it and the vitamin N kicks like a mule. Recommended you start off with small prillas, 1 click on an icetool is perfect. Also if you are coming off cigarettes and don't have snus and snuffing isn't convenient, this is perfect!

I just received my batch of the new FUBAR snuffs last night. The very first one I opened was the SNAFU plain. Plain snuffs are not always on the top of my list, but sometimes they make such good mixers that I just tend to keep them around.

When I opened the can I saw that it had a nice medium/dry moisture level and was a lighter snuff, much like many of the other plain tobaccos I have used.

All the comparison to other snuff ended when I took a little portion though. The first thought in my mind was 'WOW' It didn't have (to me)much of a burn, but it seemed to coat the entire inside of my nose with just a little pinch. The tobacco scent was just wonderful, making this one of the few plain snuffs that I would use on a regular basis.

I used my free spoon from my order which has a bowl on it about the side of an appleseed, and just one tiny portion of this and the medicated and I could REALLY feel the hit. It's an odd thing for a 21 year smoker to feel nicotine that quick and hard.

The only thing that bothered me was the container. Mine opened just fine unlike stories from others I have heard, but I question the seal at the top. It's a different seal than I have seen before, so it's just a big unknown how well it will work. It if freaks me out too much, I'll just keep the snuff in a jar.

Almond Snuff by Gawith Hoggarth

Almond Snuff is a light brown fine dry scented snuff. It has a pleasant aroma of almonds / marzipan - it also seems to have an almost 'floral' scent to it once in the nose.

As a snuff it's un-offensive but as it's fine and dry - as most Gawith Hoggarth snuff tend to be, it needs to be snuffed with caution at first.

This snuff may appeal more to the connoisseur than the beginnner - although there's no reason (apart from the caution needed when using fine snuffs) why a beginner should be afraid of trying almond snuff.

Ambassador Snuff by Gawith Hoggarth

Ambassador Snuff is a fine and dry floral scented snuff by Gawith Hoggarth.

Ambassador has a nice bouquet that can be detected before opening. It doesn't 'hit you in the face' like other floral snuffs, it's a little more subtle than that... I suppose as reflected by this snuff's title, it has the air of 'high society' about it.

For those who like their snuffs on the floral side, Ambassador will probably be a firm favourite. With a lingering scent, Ambassador will 'really spoil' (ahemm!) those of you who like a floral snuff.

As with all snuffs from Gawith Hoggarth, care needs to be taken on the first pinch - due to it being fine and dry, otherwise you're likely to take this sweetly scented snuff to far into the nose.

Suitable for the expert and beginner alike - whilst being mindful of the above cautionary note.

Cherry Snuff

Cherry snuff by Gawith Hoggarth is a fine light brown dry-ish snuff with the wonderful favour of cherry.

On opening the seal on the carton, there is a strong smell of cherries. The cherry scent carries to the nose and is very strong when first snuffed and remains for about 20 minutes or so.

Cherry snuff is a non-mentholated snuff and is a welcome addition to the Gawith Hoggarth range of snuffs. Non mentholated fruit flavoured snuffs are increasing in popularity and if cherry is 'your thing', we're sure that this latest offering from Gawith Hoggarth will become a firm favourite.

Due to the grind of cherry snuff, it would be wise to start off with a small pinch until you have found the level which is right for you. Cherry snuff is perfect for beginner or expert snuffers alike.

Lakeland snuff is described as a mentholated snuff, but it also has additional and subtle flavours.

A fine dry snuff, lakeland has a earthy fresh scent which compliments the menthol and adds a certain something 'extra' and 'different' to this snuff, which somewhat takes you by surprise on first sniffing.

If you like mentholated snuffs, you're bound to like Lakeland. The added scents give the menthol a new dimension.

M4X Snuff is another of our favourite Gawith Hoggarth snuffs.

Classed as a mentholated snuff, the menthol isn't so over powering that the base flavours are hidden. This is a nice snuff and M4X has been in one of our pockets as a daily snuff for a while now.

Similar to Eucalyptus snuff, in that it'll clear a blocked nose pretty impressively.

We like M4X snuff and we're sure you will too.

Mitchells Snuff By Gawith Hoggarth

Mitchells Snuff (previously labelled as Mitchells Special) is a fine dry light brown snuff with a floral scent.

Mitchells has a 'kick' to it. It's not unpleasant, but you definitely know you've taken a snuff - if you get what I mean...

There's something familar about Mitchells that is difficult to 'put your finger on'. It has a long lasting floral scent that seems to develop whilst in the nose.

Perhaps Mitchells is more for the connoisseur than the beginner - not that beginners should be put off this snuff, but please be careful on the first few pinches.

This fine snuff has the potential of being taken too far into the nose if a over exuberant sniff is taken!

Peppermint snuff is a light brown, fine and dry snuff. What can there be not to like about peppermint?

As with all Gawith Hoggarth snuffs, please be careful on first using. It's easy to 'go too far' with peppermint due to the grind, so start with small pinches and work your way up to find your level.

"Well, I can honestly say that this is the only completely savoury snuff I've ever encountered - there's not a vestige of sweetness: in fact I rather oddly pick up a distinct, and pleasant, saltiness. Perhaps "Sea Breezes" isn't as inapporoprate a name as I first thought. Enjoy!"

We can't top the above review, so why not give Sea Breeze snuff a try?!

SP is a mildly aromatic menthol fine ground snuff. Classed in Gawith Hoggarth in their 'plain' snuff category, SP is not at all plain in our opinion!

Potentially not suitable for beginners due to it being a fine ground snuff, SP is definitely a snuff we'd class as a 'everyday' snuff; for those with a bit of snuffing experience who like a snuff with a mainly tobacco flavoured base.

Spartan Snuff By Gawith Hoggarth

Spartan Snuff is a mentholated snuff, with added scents that I can't quite put my finger on. These added scents and flavours make it a little different to other mentholated snuffs and difficult to describe.

Not a 'plain' or 'boring run of the mill' mentholated by any stretch. Nor do I quite understand the name Spartan, as it's most certainly not...

It's been described as 'floral and fruity' by several review sites. I didn't get this at all, but then again it may be just my 'nose'.

It reminds me a little of Hedges intitally, then other flavours develop, peppermint maybe. Whatever it is, the mentholated type scent lasts for ages - it definitely has a kick to it. It's a brown, fine dry snuff and worthy of adding to your collection.

Western Glory By Gawith Hoggarth

Western Glory is a interestingly scented snuff. Darkish brown, dry and fine. Western Glory has a good 'kick' to it, it warms the nose and has subtle floral scents.

On opening the box there is a strong tobacco - almost SP scent, which will appeal to those who like the SP style of snuff.

Western Glory is 'different'. It's worth trying and the snuff is one of those which is difficult to describe, but it is most definitely 'likeable'.

It feels like it has a strong nicotine content and as with all Gawith Hoggarth snuffs, please start with small pinches and be careful with your first few snuffs as it would be easy to go 'too far' with Western Glory.

Western Glory in our opinion may well become some snuff users favourite snuff.

Whisky snuff is a fine, dry, brown snuff. Classed as a mentholated snuff by the manufacturer; with the added scent of whisky.

On opening there's a strong tobacco SP like scent with a background aroma of whisky. It feels a little 'smokey', perhaps reminiscent of a good Islay...

This snuff is a moorish snuff - the whisky flavour isn't truly evident until it's in the nose. The menthol isn't over powering and all in all, like a good whisky the balance of this snuff is very good.

Whisky snuff is for beginners and experts alike.

As with all Gawith Hoggarth snuffs, please be cautious on the first few pinches in case you take it too far back in the nose. Start small and increase until you find the pinch 'level' that's right for you.

Alpina Snuff

Alpina Snuff by Poschl is another new addition to the Snuff Store range for April 2011. Alpina snuff is considered to be a 'difficult to get hold of' snuff in the UK.

Poschl describe Alpina snuff as having; ‘A unique basic aroma, enhanced with real peppermint, fresh menthol and the aroma of dark, ripe wild fruit from the mountainous forests of Europe. This snuff is a gratifying experience for the connoisseur of snuff.’

Alpina Snuff comes in a dark green angled plastic box, with golden letters on it and has the Poschl emblem top left with the words Seit 1902. The box has a sliding lid on the top, which you slide to reveal the 'dosing hole' and then tap of the desired amount of snuff.

Doppel Aroma D Poschl Schmalzer Snuff

Doppel Aroma D Poschl Schmalzer Snuff on the rear of the packet it states Feinster echt bayerischer Brasil. Sorte: D, which translates to; Finest genuinely Bavarian Brasil. Doppel Aroma meaning double flavour.

Doppel Aroma D Poschl Schmalzer snuff has a huge following, it is different to traditional English snuff in style and flavour. More often it is of a more coarse grind and moister than what we're used to in the UK, but you're missing a treat for your nose if you haven't yet tried it.

Doppel Aroma D Poschl Schmalzer snuff is a deep, rich pudding like snuff. The aroma hits you as soon as you snip open the sachet (which comes in a generous 25g portion) the scent is almost alcoholic due to the double fermentation of this snuff.

Doppel Aroma D Poschl Schmalzer is dark, slightly coarse and moist. It create a 'tickle' in the nose, which may enduce a sneeze at first! You can feel the nicotine, the aroma is strong enough for people to detect an unusal yet fruity scent around you - let alone what you'll be experiencing in your nose!

In Europe they almost shovel these Schmalzers into their noses. But as with any snuff, start with small pinches and work your way up to a level that's suitable for you - this isn't a race, it's nasal snuff pleasure at it's finest.

You may or may not need a snuff box with this one, more than likely you'll need the help of a snuff handkerchief or bib, as you won't be able to stop feeding it into your hungry nose!

FC Bayern Snuff

What with FC Bayern Munchen being the premier football team in Baveria; an area with a strong snuff producing and snuff taking history, it is perhaps no surprise that FC Bayern have their own branded Poschl snuff for their fans!

However, one doesn't need to be a fan of FC Bayern Munchen to appreciate that FC Bayern snuff is a superb snuff and well worth trying.

FC Bayern Snuff is somewhat similar to Packards Club and Gawith Apricot in our opinion, it's a fruit flavoured snuff and there's a hint of each in the nose. FC Bayern Snuff is also metholated.

The snuff itself is brown, slight moist and of a medium grind; with the grind being more similar to that of Packards Club.

The cola scent is very similar to 'cola bottle' sweets in our opinion. The menthol in Gawith Cola isn't over powering.

Königsprise Snuff Poschl Snuff

Königsprise Snuff means Kings Pinch, and it is a beautiful snuff that is very difficult to obtain in the UK. Königsprise Snuff is a very popular snuff in Europe and has a particularly large following in Poland.

Konigsprise Snuff is a finely ground moist snuff and is dark brown in colour. It easily retains a 'pinch' shape when pinched between forefinger and thumb. The scent when opening the packet is camphor menthol, tobacco and ammonia. In the nose Konigsprise Snuff continues with these scents, but becomes more complex - citrus and spicey and there is a certain sweetness about this snuff that is difficult to explain.

On the back of the packet Konigsprise Snuff it states: Tradycyjna, orzeźwiająca tabaka w atrakcyjnej cenie, which basically translates to; A traditional, refreshing snuff at an attractive price.

Konigsprise Snuff is certainly a regal snuff in our opinion and is one that we have been dipping into on a regular basis since it's arrival. It is suitable for both beginners and expert snuff takers alike, but as always with the finer grind of snuff, take small pinches until you find the level that's right for you!

Konigsprise Snuff comes in a 10g sachet, so you will need to either fold down the edge after opening or better still, it could be kept in a snuff box fitting to it's name.

Lowenprise snuff is another of our favourite Poschl brands of snuff, that is rapidly growing in popularity in the UK.

A rough translation of Lowen Prise is 'Lion Pinch', a name which in our opinion doesn't do this fresh, strikingly aromatic snuff justice. We'll speak to Poschl and find out the history, which may hopefully explain the name.

Lowen prise snuff has a aniseed fresh nose with a hint of menthol. The aniseed flavour isn't as 'over powering' as other brands.

A slightly moist snuff, that is perfect for the beginner and should already be in the seasoned campaigner's repertoire, not too sneezy and leaves a lingering hint of aniseed in the nose - so much so that the aroma is sometimes commented on.

Basically this snuff is Poschl's attempt at recreating a traditional english menthol type snuff, on the Ozona label and they have done a good job!

As with other Ozona blends the snuff itself is brown, slightly moist and of a medium grind. The snuff has a distinct menthol flavour, that is individual to this blend of snuff and is pleasant in the nose.

Ozona English Menthol Type snuff is suitable for beginner and expert snuff takers alike, it is bound to be liked by those who love menthol snuff.

Like several others on the Ozona label, English Menthol type snuff is presented in a distinctive round metal tin, with a 'dosing' hole in the side, through which you 'tap out' your required size of pinch.

Packard's Club Snuff is a firm favourite of ours manufactured under licence by Poschl of Germany.

Described as having a discreetly fruity aroma with a masculine taste. The menthol after is really refreshing and hangs around for a good while.

Packard's snuff comes in a beautiful \'retro style\' box which is very tactile. Even better is the snuff serving dispenser, which makes using Packard\'s club snuff a breeze.

Packard's is a coarse, slightly moist snuff and a must for any serious snuffer.

Südfrucht SF Schmalzer snuff has a huge following, it is different to traditional English snuff in style and flavour. More often it is of a more coarse grind and moister than what we're used to in the UK, but you're missing a treat for your nose if you haven't yet tried it.

Südfrucht SF Schmalzer is a dark brown, slightly coarse, slightly moist double aroma, double fermented snuff. Flavouring, well the images on the packet and the name Südfrucht - South Fruit, should be a give-away, but as far as a description from testing is concerned, please read on!

On opening their is a strong banana and fruit smell. The images on the packet are of bananas, pineapples, citrus fruits, grapes, mangos. There is a sweet, alcoholic pudding aroma and also a hint of tobacco.

In the nose Südfrucht SF Schmalzer is extraordinary, it is like nothing we've ever tried. There is an explosion of fruit, pudding, vanilla, chocolate, and tobacco. The overriding scent at first is bananas, then the other flavours come on. Sit inside a warm house and the scent is different to when you're outside in the fresh air. When you clear your nose, you get another blast for free!

This tropical fruit Schmalzler is a nose treat if ever we've tried one. Non menthol, so it'll appeal to those who don't like mentholated snuff. Sweet, wow, sweet is an understatement...

Samuel Gawith Banana Snuff.

The first thing that hits you with Samuel Gawith's Banana snuff is the scent of bananas... Oh yes we've got bananas!

The banana scent can be detected without even opening the box. If you don't like bananas, then this one won't be for you. If on the other hand you like bananas, then you'll make a monkey of yourself over this fruity snuff.

Samuel Gawith's Banana snuff is a medium moist, finely ground snuff with a hint of menthol.

Samuel Gawith Black Rappee Snuff.

Black Rappee is now only available in a 20g vacuum sealed tin.

This is a black, moist, coarsely ground, naturally flavoured snuff; perfectly pinchable, but don't pinch too hard as the snuff may retain it's shape!

Due to the grind and moisture levels, Black Rappee snuff is perfect for the beginner (interested in trying a 'natural' snuff) and experts alike.

Black Rappee is a 'old style' of snuff, named 'black' because it is black in colour, the Rappee part of the name refers to the 'old French' râpé, which specifically refers to 'grated', in a tobacco context - râper, to grate, from Old French rasper; to scrape.

This refers back to a time when tobacco was sold in a 'Carotte' - a cylindrical roll of tobacco; again French this time for carrot - referring to the shape of a tightly rolled leaf (or leaves) of tobacco.

A snuff user would scrape / grate (râpé) a desired amount of snuff from their carotte of tobacco and then use as required. Many antique snuff boxes have a grater on / in them and a place for the user to store their grated snuff and carotte of tobacco.

Samuel Gawith Celtic Talisman Aromatic Snuff

Samuel Gawith Celtic Talisman Aromatic Snuff is a new addition to the Snuff Store inventory for 2012.

Celtic Talisman snuff is a brown, dry-ish, slightly fine snuff that is described as aromatic.

Celtic Talisman has a strong tobacco and menthol scent when opening the box. As with all new snuffs, when first sampling this Celtic Talisman, we started with small pinches to find our level.

In the nose, Celtic Talisman is minty and fresh. Slightly sneezy for those not used to the Samuel Gawith range. This snuff is a welcome addition to the Snuff Store inventory and will be liked by those who enjoy their snuff menthol and fresh.
