Ziricote Wood Snuff Box

The Ziricote wood snuff box is a new wooden snuff box from our regularly stocked 'German Craftsman' made snuff boxes.

A beautiful individually handmade snuff box, (so the grain and colour may differ slightly from the image.) all are of excellent quality and lovely to hold.

The Ziricote wood snuff box is hand made by a craftsman in Germany on a 'bespoke' basis, to a very practical (no surprise there then eh?) design - BMW, Mercedes, Wooden Snuff Box...

Ziricote wood grows throughout Central and tropical South America and is usually used to make luxury products and is a favoured and prized wood sometimes used to make custom handmade guitars! The wood is extremely hard.

The Ziricote wood snuff boxes are finished with a carnauba wax polish (known as the 'queen' of waxes) and carnauba wax is usually the finish of choice for most briar tobacco or smoking pipes as it gives such a fine finish.

Carnauba wax produces a high gloss finish when buffed on to wood. This carnauba wax finish dulls with time rather than flaking off (as is the case with most other finishes) when used on the outside of wooden products.

The snuff box measures approximately 7cm long, 4cm wide and 2cm deep. It can hold around 10g of your favourite snuff.

The operation of opening this Ziricote wood snuff box is ingenious. The lid closes very tightly and is held in place by a beech dowel, which will colour up with use from the snuff tobacco it holds in place.

To open, you slide the dowel out and what only can be described as a 'triangular' opening appears in the box. Fill the box with your favourite snuff. Replace the pieces and you're all set. To view full operating instructions, click how to use snuff box.

Included in this shipment of Ziricote snuff boxes are two (and only two) that have a creamy white stripe of 'sap wood' to one side of the box. The creamy white sap wood shows a beautiful contrast against the usual almost black colour of the Ziricote wood. If you would like one of these 'two tone' Ziricote snuff boxes please indicate this in your 'order comments' section when making your order.

The rest of the Ziricote snuff boxes are mainly black / dark wood as shown in the image, with beautifully detailed grain and are bound to be a prized addition to your snuff box collection.

Pink Ivory wood is a is a very rare African wood, usually used to make luxury products.The wood is extremely hard. Pink Ivory wood historically was the 'Royal' wood of the Zulus because only the royal family were allowed to possess the wood - when researching this wood for this entry, I also found reference to the fact that way back in history, anyone found in possession of Pink Ivory wood other than a Royal family member faced the death penalty!

The cocobolo wood snuff box is hand made by a craftsman in Germany on a 'bespoke' basis, to a very practical (no surprise there then eh?) design - BMW, Mercedes, Wooden Snuff Box...

Cocobolo wood is a 'hard' wood and difficult to carve. The cocobolo wood snuff boxes are finished with a bees wax polish on the outside.

The snuff box measures approximately 5.5cm long, 4cm wide and 2cm deep. It can hold around 10g of your favourite snuff.

The operation of opening this cocobolo wood snuff box is ingenious. The lid closes very tightly and is held in place by a beech dowel, which will colour up with use from the snuff tobacco it holds in place.

There are two ways to use this snuff box;

1/ The dowel has a 'dosing' notch in it, with an arrow stamped into the side. This dosing notch can be used to get a measured amount of snuff. Push the dowel in and the dosing notch appears.

2/ Also push the dowel in and a small circular opening will appear. You can then tap out your snuff onto the back of your hand, and sniff or pinch to your nose.

Horn Snuff Box

This horn snuff box is imported from Bavaria and has a sliding lid. As the snuff box is made from horn, colour may vary from the one shown.

The horn snuff box has a sliding lid. The lid slides back approximately 1.5cm to reveal a 'dosing hole', the required amount of snuff is then 'tapped' out from the dosing hole by the user.

The snuff box is filled via the same dosing hole; it is therefore advisable to use a small snuff spoon or similar to fill the horn snuff box.

This horn snuff box has a rustic handmade charm and has a tight fitting lid that will not leak snuff - the lid slides back into place when close and requires quite a 'push' to get it moving back along the grooves to re-open and so offers peace of mind against any pocket spillages.

The horn snuff box measures approximately 8.5cm long x 5cm (sloping down to 4cm) tall x 2cm at widest point and can easily hold around 15g of snuff.

Horn is an excellent material for snuff uses as it is has long been believed not to 'taint' or 'flavour' food products when used. This is why horn caviar spoons are highly sort after - horn being favoured over metal, as metal is according to caviar connoisseurs supposed to give an undesireable metallic taste to caviar.

Crafted from sterling silver, this old racing cars design snuff box is a retangle shape approximately 3.5cm long and 2.5cm wide. It has a 'usable' depth of about 1cm. The actual silver weight of this snuff box is approximately 25g. It is hallmarked .925 silver on the reverse of the box and finished to a high polish.

The silver snuff box itself is 'hinged' and the lid closes tightly with a 'snap' and is snuff proof. The hinge is on the outside of the box and when the box is closed / open does not come in to contact with the snuff and so will not clog. However care should always be taken when filling to ensure that snuff doesn't clog the hinge.

This lovely wooden snuff box is a handmade work of art! Because they are individually made, each box slightly differs from the next due to the natural grains in the wood.

This snuff box is finished to a high standard and measures approximately 6.5cm long, by 4cm wide and 1.5cm deep.

The snuff box has a sliding lid, which ensures a tight seal. The sliding motion of the lid may appear a little 'tight'; but will loosen with use, whilst always providing a good seal.

The inside of the box has a natural wooden finish and so will stain with age to the colour of your favourite snuff!

Beautifully inlaid with a striped bar code like pattern in brown, yellow and orange, this Lyptus wood snuff box has rounded corners and would make a perfect gift for a friend or even a special treat for yourself.

Oliver Twist Eucalyptus

Oliver Twist Eucalyptus is described as having a fresh, eucalyptus taste. Eucalyptus by Oliver Twist is one of the most recently added chewing tobacco varieties.

To use Oliver Twist Eucalyptus, you place a tobacco pellet in the side of the mouth between cheek and gum. If at any point the tobacco pellet starts to lose it's flavour, gently squeeze the pellet against gum and cheek and the flavour will be re-activated.

Oliver Twist Eucalyptus is packed in a pocket-sized plastic box. The tobacco pellets are vacuum packed in each box in aluminum foil and plastic film. This packaging keeps the tobacco pellets from drying out.

The average sugar content of each tobacco pellet is 0.05 gram gram. Each pellet is approx 1cm long by 0.5cm in diameter.

The Violet Wood Snuff Box is a new design on our regularly stocked 'German Craftsman' made snuff boxes.

A beautiful individually handmade snuff box, (so the grain and colour may differ slightly from the image.) all are of excellent quality and lovely to hold.

The Violet Wood Snuff box is hand made by a craftsman in Germany on a 'bespoke' basis, to a very practical (no surprise there then eh?) design - BMW, Mercedes, Wooden Snuff Box...

Violet wood is a heavy 'hard' wood and notoriously difficult to carve. The Violet wood snuff boxes are finished with a bees wax polish on the outside.

The snuff box measures approximately 5.7cm long, 4cm wide and 1.5cm deep. It can hold around 10g of your favourite snuff.

The operation of opening this Violet snuff box is ingenious. The lid closes very tightly and is held in place by a beech dowel, which will colour up with use from the snuff tobacco it holds in place.

There are two ways to use this snuff box;

1/ The dowel has a 'dosing' notch in it, with an arrow stamped into the side. This dosing notch can be used to get a measured amount of snuff. Push the dowel in and the dosing notch appears.

2/ Also push the dowel in and a small circular opening will appear. You can then tap out your snuff onto the back of your hand, and sniff or pinch to your nose.

Blender's Bundle Snuff was specially commissioned by Julia & Tim - and named Blender's Bundle to celebrate the birth of their third son Jacob, on the 14/11/2008.

Blender's Bundle was actually in the pipeline under a different name, by request of Tim - with one of the best snuff manufacturers / blenders in the UK.

Blender's Bundle is a 'real ale' snuff and would perhaps have been called 'Sweet Stout', had we have received it in a 'finished' state at any other time - other than just after the birth of Jacob.

Tim has been a CAMRA member for many years, and wanted a snuff that reminded him of the smells that could sometimes be detected in the air whilst growing up in close proximity to the now defunct Romford Brewery Company!

Blender's Bundle is also a shameless 'idea copycat', of fantastic local 'micro' brewery's beer - 'Brewster's Bundle' by The Hogs Back Brewery. Created to celebrate a similary joyous occasion for their 'lady' brewster.

The Hogs Back Brewery is close to us (these days) location wise. We've done the Hog's Back brewery tour several times and their award winning beer is well worth checking out if you're into 'real ale'.

So what kind of flavours can you expect with Brewster's Bundle then? We think we can detect, caramel, toffee, hops, malt, and yeast flavours.

It also has a high ammonia scent at the moment as it's fresh from the blender. You can of course leave this to air for a few hours if you don't like the ammonia scent - we think it adds to the over all flavour of the snuff.

John Baxter reckons; 'It is quiet pleasent and does have a beery scent to it reminding me of the old days when we had The Hull Brewery Co. in the centre of the city, we got that smell if the wind was in the right direction. Or like passing a pub on a hot day with the doors open wide, when you haven't been drinking - you get the similar smell...'

Chocolate Orange Snuff by Wilsons.

Chocolate Orange is a new snuff from Wilsons of Sharrow, and we couldn't wait to 'tap and unwrap' a tin... Ahemm!

Ok, on opening the tin of chocolate orange snuff, (after discarding the sticky tape wrapper) the first scent one gets is of tobacco; this is immediately followed by a dark chocolate scent and then close on it's heels is a citrusy tang.

Our tin of Wilsons Chocolate Orange snuff also had a hint of ammonia - a good indication that the snuff is fresh from the mill and fermentation is still taking place!

Chocolate Orange snuff is a light brown, finely ground, slightly moist snuff. A pinch retains it's shape and although it's grind is on the 'fine' side, this snuff is a suitable snuff for beginners and experts alike.

We wouldn't consider this snuff to be a 'sneezy' snuff and it would in our opinion be perfect to take all day.

After taking a 'regulation' sized Snuff Store pinch, (a small pinch to start with any new snuff, no matter how well we 'know' the manufacturer, just in case it 'knocks our socks off'!) the first thing one notices is that it has a very close flavour to a popular chocolate orange product that goes by a slightly different name...

The chocolate (unlike when sniffing the tin) is secondary to the citrus on first pinch and then the chocolate develops into a pleasing chocolatey orange flavour that lasts for a while. Worthy of note for chocolate (snuff) lovers and those who like a citrus snuff with a difference.

Chocolate Orange snuff is bound to become some snuffers regular pinch - we kept diving in during the day and the sensation never 'dulled'!

Clove snuff was originally blended by McChrystals for the US market, we've had lots of requests for this one. Clove snuff hadn't been available for a while until our enquiries, but is now once again available in 3.5g tins.

Whisky Snuff by Gawith Hoggarth

Whisky snuff is a fine, dry, brown snuff. Classed as a mentholated snuff by the manufacturer; with the added scent of whisky.

On opening there's a strong tobacco SP like scent with a background aroma of whisky. It feels a little 'smokey', perhaps reminiscent of a good Islay...

This snuff is a moorish snuff - the whisky flavour isn't truly evident until it's in the nose. The menthol isn't over powering and all in all, like a good whisky the balance of this snuff is very good.

Whisky snuff is for beginners and experts alike.

As with all Gawith Hoggarth snuffs, please be cautious on the first few pinches in case you take it too far back in the nose. Start small and increase until you find the pinch 'level' that's right for you.

Spartan Snuff By Gawith Hoggarth

Spartan Snuff is a mentholated snuff, with added scents that I can't quite put my finger on. These added scents and flavours make it a little different to other mentholated snuffs and difficult to describe.

Not a 'plain' or 'boring run of the mill' mentholated by any stretch. Nor do I quite understand the name Spartan, as it's most certainly not...

It's been described as 'floral and fruity' by several review sites. I didn't get this at all, but then again it may be just my 'nose'.

It reminds me a little of Hedges intitally, then other flavours develop, peppermint maybe. Whatever it is, the mentholated type scent lasts for ages - it definitely has a kick to it. It's a brown, fine dry snuff and worthy of adding to your collection.

As with all Gawith Hoggarth snuffs, start small and work your way up with pinch sizes.

Western Glory is a interestingly scented snuff. Darkish brown, dry and fine. Western Glory has a good 'kick' to it, it warms the nose and has subtle floral scents.

On opening the box there is a strong tobacco - almost SP scent, which will appeal to those who like the SP style of snuff.

Western Glory is 'different'. It's worth trying and the snuff is one of those which is difficult to describe, but it is most definitely 'likeable'.

There's something familar about Mitchells that is difficult to 'put your finger on'. It has a long lasting floral scent that seems to develop whilst in the nose.

This lovely wooden snuff box is made from rose wood, because of the nature of the wood, the snuff box that you receive may have slighly different grain / colour markings than the snuff box in the picture.

A beautiful individually handmade snuff box, (so the grain and colour may differ slightly from the image.) all are of excellent quality and lovely to hold.

The Rosewood (Bubinga) Snuff box is hand made by a craftsman in Germany on a 'bespoke' basis, to a very practical (no surprise there then eh?) design - BMW, Mercedes, Wooden Snuff Box...

Described as a beautiful, dense hardwood with a lustrous appearance, Bubinga has a rose (hence the name) - colored background with darker purple striping. The Rosewood (Bubinga) snuff boxes are finished with a bees wax polish on the outside.

The snuff box measures approximately 7cm long, 4cm wide and 2cm deep. It can hold around 10g of your favourite snuff. The Rosewood (Bubinga) snuff boxes are finished with a bees wax polish on the outside.

The operation of opening this Palisander snuff box is ingenious. The lid closes very tightly and is held in place by a beech dowel, which will colour up with use from the snuff tobacco it holds in place.

There are two ways to use this snuff box;

1/ The dowel has a 'dosing' notch in it, with an arrow stamped into the side. This dosing notch can be used to get a measured amount of snuff. Push the dowel in and the dosing notch appears.

2/ Also push the dowel in and a small circular opening will appear. You can then tap out your snuff onto the back of your hand, and sniff or pinch to your nose.

Stammheimer Hopfen Schnupf (Hops Snuff) by McChrystals' is a hop flavoured snuff of distinctive flavour and quality.

Stammheimer Hopfen snuff is a as close to a 'beer' flavoured snuff that we've come across. The flavour is bitter, sweet, and tangy all at the same time!

Stammheimer Hopfen snuff has a nice aroma of hops and tobacco and as soon as you open the tin you'll notice the scent; which is quite unlike any other snuff we've tried.

This snuff is brown in colour and has a grind consistency similar to McChrystals' O & G.

Hop snuff comes in a McChrystals 'large' tin and contains about 8.75 g of snuff.

Stammheimer Hopfen snuff was originally specifically blended for a specific continental European market and due to this, prior to Snuff Store making the initial enquiries a few years back it was considered to be a 'difficult to get hold of snuff'.

This metal snuff mill is a heavy weight quality product that should give you a large enough capacity to make fairly decent sized snuff batches for home use. Grinding snuff with this snuff mill is a breeze.

Measuring approximately 7.5 cm tall and with a diameter of approximately 7cm, the snuff mill breaks down into three parts, all the parts screw together. This snuff mill weighs approx 200g.

The first, is the milling apparatus that has a handle on the top that you turn to mill your snuff, this is connected to the snuff grinder which operates on a spring like mechanism that pushes the tobacco against a metal sieve and grinding blades.

The second is the chamber into which you place the 'raw' material you wish to mill into snuff. This chamber is approximately 2cm deep and can hold a fair quantity of your chosen raw tobacco material.

The third is a funnel that screws on underneath the sieve and catches your snuff and funnels it into a container of your choice.

If DIY snuff making is your thing, then this snuff mill can be used to grind up tobacco products such as cigars, cigarettes, loose baccy etc into a fine tobacco powder.

Then all you have to do is add your favourite flavour or go 'au natural' and you're in the snuff making business.

Round Silver Snuff Box with small and large 'dosing hole'.

This snuff box is made from beautiful highly polished silver and is bound to be a point of conversation whenever you take it out for a pinch.

It is .925 Sterling Silver and has a hallmark on the side; size-wise its approximately 3.8cm in diameter x 1 cm deep and weighs about 24 grams. For approximate size estimations, we have taken this photo alongside a one penny piece.

Those of you familiar with Ozona Raspberry snuff, will recognise the design of this round silver snuff box; to use, you simply twist the top of the round silver snuff box whilst holding the bottom to align the dosing holes, this will allow you to tap out your desired measure of snuff to your wrist. Simply twist again to 'close' the round silver snuff box and prevent spillage.

To fill use a snuff spoon or a small funnel - or adapted paper funnel. We have also been told that the 'two halves' can also be gently prised apart and the 'inner' half filled with your desired snuff. Care must be taken if using this method not to damage the round silver snuff box's 'runners'.

The round silver snuff box comes with two different sized dosing holes. Depending on required measure, grind or moisture level of your chosen snuff, adjust to the required hole.

Flavoured with Sandalwood Oil & French Carotte Essence, French Carotte snuff is historically described as below;

"Snuff blending allows for infinite variety, since the many bases and well-nigh limitless perfumes give the expert ample scope for experiment. Sometimes, a happy combination of ingredients is arrived at with gratifying results. This happened with French Carotte.

As a mixture it is new but the components were in use over two centuries ago. In earlier time the word Carotte meant the roll of tobacco from which snuff users grated their own; today it names one of the finest bases, smooth and retentive, deserving only the best of perfumes.
